Winter Is…

Winter is nature’s way of saying, “Up yours.”

Robert Byrne

Poets write lots of pretty words about winter, and there are times that I’ll admit they may have a point or two. But today! What you can’t see in the photo: the National Weather Service’s dreaded “Wintry Mix” of snow, sleet, freezing rain and ditto drizzle, which is an abomination to the spirit.  Whoever you are, Robert Byrne, you got it right!

A Postscript: Even though it’s snowed most of today, my chilly heart has been warmed by the passion of my winter-loving friends. So I’ve borrowed their eyes, and Emily Dickinson’s words, to try and see the beauty that’s eluding me. Did I succeed at all? Take a look, and decide.

I have a different take on the winter scene today, compliments of an anonymous artist: http://smilekiddo.wordpress.com/2011/01/18/lemonade-out-of-lemons/

Now what are the odds of making a gorgeous snow angel out of a Wintry Mix of drizzle, sleet, and slush?
I’m trying to Smile, Kiddo! But it’s tough sledding (ahem) —

I know… today’s high was 12 degrees here, and we’re looking at single digits in the daytime the rest of the week (and negative single digits at night). So I’m working on gratitude: that I have a warm house and warm car; that I have an indoors job; that my commute has been safe and reasonable every day this week; that cocoa tastes better when it’s cold outside… 😉

Hiding in the back row. Mumbling something about liking winter – all of it – and ducking out before you see me.
