Proverbs, and other Anonymous Authors —

Did you ever hear that prissy little jingle:

Good, better, best,

Never let it rest,

Till the good is better, 

and the better best.

Well, I say phooey on it. That’s what all the recent posts here on perfection and perfectionism have been in aid of, slaying the dragon of that fierce enemy of achievement and joy and contentment. There are lots of famous people I could cite, from Shakespeare to Wilt Chamberlain, but I think I’m going instead to quote from wisdom faceless and nameless — and timeless. First, two proverbial authors:

Gold cannot be pure, and people cannot be perfect. – Chinese Proverb

He that will have a perfect brother must resign himself to remain brotherless. – Italian Proverb

And then two authors unknown:

No one is perfect — that’s why pencils have erasers.

And finally,

The most difficult part of attaining perfection is finding something to do for an encore.

They all speak to me; do any speak to you? In other voices, perhaps?
