Proverbs, and other Anonymous Authors —

Did you ever hear that prissy little jingle:

Good, better, best,

Never let it rest,

Till the good is better,

and the better best.

Well, I say phooey on it. That’s what all the recent posts here on perfection and perfectionism have been in aid of, slaying the dragon of that fierce enemy of achievement and joy and contentment. There are lots of famous people I could cite, from Shakespeare to Wilt Chamberlain, but I think I’m going instead to quote from wisdom faceless and nameless — and timeless. First, two proverbial authors:

Gold cannot be pure, and people cannot be perfect. – Chinese Proverb

He that will have a perfect brother must resign himself to remain brotherless. – Italian Proverb

And then two authors unknown:

No one is perfect — that’s why pencils have erasers.

And finally,

The most difficult part of attaining perfection is finding something to do for an encore.

They all speak to me; do any speak to you? In other voices, perhaps?

Or maybe, heaven forfend, you like the jingle! Whatever, take another look at T2T’s most recent post and make time to watch and experience Leonard Cohen’s extraordinary “Ring the Bells.”

Ha! My mother used to repeat that jingle to me all the time! I like better Anna Quindlen’s thought – The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.”

  3. You two have the right idea. Pauline, I love your thought. I know we will never be perfect. I just attempt to be the best wife, daughter and mommy possible. When I give all I can and try my hardest….well, that is good enough for me at the end of the day.

Thanks for continuing to inspire me and provide things to think about! You are terrific! I enjoy you just the way you are!

Here I’m enjoying the comments just as much as the post itself. What Pauline said really spoke to me. It’s very hard to become perfectly me — a person who doesn’t give up on doing things just because she realizes she can’t be perfect.

I hadn’t ever heard that jingle – thank God! The last thing is more fuel to add to my perfectionistic fire. 🙂

I’m about to start reading “The Creative Habit” by Twyla Tharp – and out of curiosity I flipped it open to a random page. Here’s what I saw (p.212): “Every creative person has to learn to deal with failure, because failure, like death and taxes, is inescapable. If Leonardo and Beethoven and Goethe failed on occasion, what makes you think you’ll be the exception?”

    Amen sister! 🙂
