Haute Cuisine by the Side of the Road!

One of the great word-of-mouth places to eat in the Pioneer Valley is affectionately called the Snack Shack. Which is a perfect descriptor (although not its official name) —

All kinds of folk, at all hours, by the side of the road, eating all kinds of stuff, lots of it fried. Healthy? Hey, that’s not what it’s about. It’s about fish tacos and shrimp po-boys and lobster roll and whole clam bellies — Fried scallops, once in a while if you’re lucky. And burgers, and dogs, and chili dogs and sauerkraut, fries and sweet potato fries, you know. And it’s strictly seasonal, a summertime kind of thing. People wait impatiently for the first warm weekend they’re open —

Unless y’all come and see us this summer, you probably won’t get a chance to eat here, so I’m taking up the slack to show you what you’re missing:

The one and only, the official Williamsburg Snack Bar —

The Restaurant (Husband behind Palm Fronds)

You order at the window, and they shout it out when it’s ready. (Note: this customer is NOT from Massachusetts)

The Outdoor Dining Room. (Also the only dining room.) On a weekend, this place is JAMMED. Today the turnover’s fast and there was a lot of takeaway.

Today’s Catch: Fish Tacos! And they were good

And I thought all those Smithies in Northampton only ate foie gras!

Luckily, more than a summer time treat. They are open now for a full six months from April to October, scallops every other weekend. And don’t forget to pop next door for the best soft ice cream around!

You’re right, I forgot to mention the soft ice cream — although you have to walk past the Garden Center to get to it.
Had black raspberry the first time we were there. Fabulous!

Wonderful post! Those fish tacos look good, but a chili dog with fries would really hit the spot right now.

I think I’d like this place. If I’m ever in Mass. I’ll remember it 🙂

There was a place like this in my home town growing up – only they were strictly a burgers-and-fries place (with nice root beer floats), and I doubt anything was seasonal… 😉

If you do, come by and say hi!
(Although Maine is so beautiful in the summer, how could you bear to leave?)
Thanks for visiting. And thanks for a salmon recipe I plan to try soon — I’ve never yet cooked salmon so that I enjoyed it, but this one looks good. Five-spice powder, yum.
