My Fountain of Youth

The 16th century conquistador Juan Ponce de Léon spent a lot of time and money in the New World looking for the fabled Fountain of Youth, the mythical water source that would make people young again. He never found it, but he did discover Florida in the process, and to this day lots of folk still seek a fountain of youth there.

Well, seek on, people. As for me, I’ve found my Fountain of Youth. It’s right in the Holyoke Mall, an easy car ride away:

They call it The Apple Store. Here’s the fair maiden who offers the promise:

If you buy a new Apple computer, a MacBook Pro or a MacAir, you can — for $99.95, coin of the modern realm — invest in a year of regular (every day, if you like) personal tutoring with your own personal Creative. Yep, that’s the title of the tutors, the guys in the royal blue shirts, you gotta love Apple!  (Actually they’re doing some fancy footwork with the program at the moment, and you can now have workshop sessions instead, or drop-in-whenever-you-want-to quickies, but I was baptized in the waters of the old-fashioned 50-minute hour, just like with the best psychotherapists, and that’s the program that gets my allegiance.)

So why is this my Fountain of Youth?

Well, for openers: look who surrounds us here. Hub and I are the Ancient of Days in this company. But not one person ever makes us feel that way. The geniuses behind the Genius Bar take care of any hardware problems. And all of the sharp, high-tech, patient, amiable young guru Creatives welcome us one to one, assume we can learn whatever we want to, offer possibility and challenge and mental stimulation — And some laughs, and always, something new and unexpected that we can do with our Macs. Can’t feel old in this company!

So whenever we’re feeling kind of old and dull-edged and worn out, we make sure to schedule a One-to-One session at the Apple Store. Biggest kick recently was the scene last week  at the low square table up front:

Let’s hear it for Apple and the late, great Steve Jobs! They care for the old, they care for the young, they give everybody the same shot at expressing themselves in the world in any way they choose. Maybe movies aren’t the only things that have sequels. Maybe we could call this photo, kind of like Star Trek,  Apple: The Next Generation:

When I go, beam me up, Scotty!

Have been to the place where Ponce de Leon supposedly landed in Florida, several times in fact, and yes it seems people do still go to Florida for that purpose! Enjoyed hearing of your adventures with the Creatives.

Well … this sounds all fine and dandy! Is this as if you’re taking courses, and in this case … what is it you’re learning about? The computer itself, or some creative software?

It’s really odd, but I’ve never come in contact with a Mac in my whole [computer] life! In fact, not any Apple related product. I don’t even have an iPhone, like so many other people.

In any event; I’m glad these people make you feel good. So many times, I’ve felt really old, when walking in to some computer/electronics store — they’ve looked at me as something the cat had dragged in [being old and woman to boot] … until I opened my mouth and asked them something.

This is all software stuff (but also how the computer functions, if you like)— and you learn whatever you have questions about, wherever that leads, f’rinstance for me through Apple’s word processing program Pages, the photo program iPhoto, you could do magic with movies through iMovie (I don’t but don’t care to), as well as all the various things that iTunes can do, making music (even composing it) through Garage Band, the possibilities seem infinite. I make photo greeting cards through Apple, and am now trying out making my own on my computer. Frank works mostly on editing his photos through Aperture, which is not quite Photoshop, but a lot of steps in that direction.
Your experience in computer/electronics stores is mine — except here at Apple!
As for you, you’re quite the pro in a lot of different computer areas, you should feel superior and smug confronted by these insipid clerks. That would be a more appropriate response (although I suspect it isn’t your response.)
      Up the old folk!

Oh I’ve done that … said things to them, to put them in their right place. I know [about] Aperture. My ‘mentor’ in the photo shop, where I took the camera course, is a certified Aperture instructor. I should take a Photoshop course … I’m such a loser, being self-taught.

Pooh, self-taught is GOOD. Steve Jobs himself flunked out or dropped out of college.
What impressed me most about those kids in the Apple store was they didn’t wait for anyone to explain anything, they didn’t ask, they just picked up the iPads and off they went! In my next life —-

I’m in full understanding with those kids. Nothing like the feeling of a new gadget … exploring a new cellphone or computer … figuring out its bells ‘n whistles — I totally LOVE that!

I break out in a cold sweat when I have to answer a ringing cellphone. 😦

I love that the folks at Apple are offering knowledge; while not totally for free (which would be the ideal), at least for a good price. And I love that *you* strive to continue learning, to “keep up” with technology (and indeed, the world). Kudos to you both! 🙂

  4. I too am a lover of Apple: Apple iPad, Apple iPhone, Apple stores, Apple Geniuses, Apple stores. Did I mention Apple stores? I wish I could afford an Apple computer – some day – and you’re right. They don’t see, age, race, creed, wrinkles, or grey hair. They are cool! It’s like the Starbuck’s of the technology world. Only better. Just hang out and enjoy. Fun!

They are COOL. The ultimate cool.
Love ’em to pieces. I’m actually considering an iPhone, I who break out with flop sweat when it comes to anything about a cell phone (see reply to Rebekah) — Do you have one? Do you love it?

    Hi,
I have never used an Apple, but what a great idea they have, it would certainly help a lot of people. 🙂

  6. This looks and sounds great. My daughter switched to Mac about 8 years ago and would never go back to PC. Me? I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to figure it out. But, once I become a pro on my IPad who knows? this was an entertaining post. Now I’m to find out if there is a version of aperture for the Ipad.

Whoo Hoo! You’re on your way —

My husband was wondering about aperture for the iPad too but never got around to asking last session. He’s now thinking of an iPhone instead of an iPad (cuz he’s got his old MacBook).

Blogger is a whole different animal from WordPress, I think —
One of the availabilities “over here” at WP is the About page, to tell something about you. Maybe you won’t choose to do that — but viewers are usually interested, so you might think about it 🙂

  8. I LOVE my MAC. I can’t hie me down to the local Apple store (there isn’t one) but I can often find the answers I need on the web. Or, i can call my daughter – she’s a pro (and she does have a local Apple store – yours!)

Macs inspire love. I don’t think I ever heard anyone (including my husband before he got his Mac) say I love my Dell or I love my Toshiba.
Happy to share the Apple store with Cassie!

  9. I LOVE my apple products. But what I love best about Apple and Steve Jobs is that they have enabled my mother who has never touched a computer in her life to now read books off her iPad and to send the most interesting text messages on the go 🙂

Hi Judith – we all have very different experiences when it comes to computing. After one of our family friends – might not be any longer 😉 – treated my son to an iPod I experienced the issue of Apple trying to take over everything on my pc. Their applications worm their way into everything so that removal results in apple install errors everywhere 😦 Never again! The Irony… He’s now using my secondhand Walkman for his music because its sound is significantly better than his iPod! I won’t be loading iPod software on my next pc when I upgrade!

And me… I’m listening on a Walkman A860 series with a pair of Beats Solo ‘s … Very nice 🙂

You will love your iPhone (camera and apps are awesome) and I hope you get it soon! I was the first in my family to go Mac and they all expected big trouble with the combo but I have loved it from the start. Apple sales have gone up if only because family and friends who visit me seem to go home with one! On another note, we were in Detroit not so long ago where the menus at a particular bar/restaurant were iPads!
Cynics might accuse us of drinking the Apple Kool-Aid but I love your Fountain of Youth!

You made me laugh, Patti! The Apple Kool-Aid —

And you strengthen my timid resolve to try an iPhone because I actually find new technology very daunting, and there’s no One-to-One for iPhones (although I’m sure the Creatives would help me out there as well).

More forces than just the Fountain of Youth — it turns out!

Emboldened by your encouragement, we stopped at the Verizon store this morning to check out the iPhone. And guess what — perhaps in imitation of Apple, who knows? — Verizon offers free classes in How to Use Your New iPhone, à la Apple’s One to One!
The iPhones are what I consider fearfully expensive, but we’ve recently found out the hard way that our old folks’ Consumer Cellular has huge black holes in its coverage, so my feeling of emergency security with them is seriously eroded, and I think we’re going to go for it!
