On Mondays, at the Museum —

THE INSIDE STORY!

It’s Monday, the day almost every museum in the world is closed to the public. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind those gated doors on Mondays, there’s a delightful poem by Marilyn Donnelly that gives the inside story —

If I knew how to collage photos here on WordPress, I would make it easy for you. But I don’t; and so I’m sending you on a kind of scavenger hunt instead. Do the work, click the links, it’s your own Monday morning treasure hunt, and you’ll be able to follow along with the poem (and the people enjoying their day off) as it unfolds. Here goes:

On Mondays

On Mondays when the museums are closed

and a handful of guards

look the other way

or read their newspapers

all of the figures

step out of golden frames

to stroll the quiet halls

or visit among old friends.

Picasso’s twisted ladies

rearrange themselves

to trade secrets

with the languid odalisques of Matisse

while sturdy Rembrandt men

shake the dust

from their velvet tams

and talk shop.

Voluptuous Renoir women

take their rosy children by the hand

to the water fountains

where they gossip

while eating Cezanne’s luscious red apples.

Even Van Gogh

in his tattered yellow straw hat

seems almost happy

on Mondays when the museums are closed.

Now that was fun! I know that dolls and toys come to life when we’re not looking – wish I’d written the book before Toy Story came out!

Wonderful poem … it really perks your imagination, and you can envision all this happening πŸ™‚

Back home, ALL banks used to close at 3PM, and someone wrote a song about that … a very comical song about what they were doing in there..

So your next task is to find the comical song and translate it to make us laugh —

(What DO they do in the banks? Count gold bars in the vault???? Crank out paper money on printing presses???)

Well just last week my sister forwarded me one of those emails which seems apropos – could be an Upstairs / Downstairs version of Mondays at the Museum which may have changed with the times?
    …….
‘A thief in Paris planned to steal some Paintings from the Louvre.
After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings,
and made it safely to his van..
However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied, “Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings.’
    I had no Monet
    To buy Degas
    To make the Van Gogh.”
And continuing with the French theme (if not museum-only associations) the email read …
    See if you have De Gaulle to send this on to someone else;
I sent it to you because I figured I had nothing Toulouse…..
