“Early to bed and early to rise
Makes people healthy and wealthy and wise.”
That’s the folk wisdom, anyway. I kept thinking about “Late to bed and late to rise…” but couldn’t come up with anything at all, let alone anything inspiring. And yet that’s my modus vivendi, I’m afraid. I may pop into bed early, but ETA on my actual sleep time is guaranteed to be 11 p.m. or later. Much later, sometimes.
So when sunrise comes around, despite the impassioned descriptions of my early-rising friends (Pauline? Jen? are you there or are you outside already?) the beauties of the early morning sky tempt me not.
This morning, though, I’d been passing one of THOSE nights, you know, sleep a few hours, wake a few hours, sleep and wake, sleep and wake, won’t it ever be morning? THAT kind of night. So in desperation, about 5 a.m. I decided if you can’t lick ’em, join ’em, and I staggered into the front room to see the morning sky.
The streetlight’s still on — A few lights at the neighbors which burn all night — And a quite lovely turning-to-blue sky — Day is breaking. And to think it happens every single morning!
(How about you? What do you think of daybreak? Are you a lark or a night owl?)
I’m a true lark, there’s nothing quite like the still of early morning!

A lark, and I love it that way…..early mornings are the best part of the day for me! Everything is still and quiet as the world is waking up, the birds joyfully singing their morning chorus, happy at the start of another day and wondering what it will bring with it.
Love your photo of the world still asleep!

Move over, Pauline and Jen — you have another kindred soul!
I’m happy for the world that it has such bright-eyed eager folk in it.

I’m up at 7AM every morning — it’s as if I’d had a built-in clock! To get dressed, and get OUT … now that would be an achievement! I have to muster up all my will-power to do that, and it hasn’t happened in a couple of years.
It seems I need less sleep the older I get. Used to sleep 8 hours in order to feel good, but now I’m down to six, seven hours. Love the mornings, though … to see the sun rise is priceless.

We’re somewhere in the same ballpark, Rebekah. My eyes are usually open by 7 am. But then they close again, or I’m into a book — but I’m not dressed and ready to get out, that’s for sure.
OTOH — where would we go at 7 a.m.? Nothing’s open! (Yeah, I know I could go for a walk in nature. Alas, not my style.)

I adore early. pre-dawn morning. It’s just what has to happen in order to experience and appreciate it. My entire life I’ve been a night owl. I’m wondering if the adage about teaching an old dog new tricks is true. 🙂

I don’t know about the dogs and the teaching part, Eric. I think it does get harder to learn new stuff, yes —
However, after 75 or so, spontaneous change begins to happen. Unbidden, to be sure, but definitely change, and in unexpected ways. So you never know! The adventure continues. Owl into lark? Who knows!

In unexpected ways, indeed. I like and can work with that.
As for owl into lark, I always remain open to possibilities and shifts. 🙂

Well, thank you for the kind words, Julia.
I’m not sure it felt that way. But in the classic phrase — it seemed like a good idea at the time!

I had about 3 hours under my belt by the time that gorgeous sun made its way into the sky this morning. It was certainly a beauty. But I KNEW there was something different about it – there was one extra person in the audience!

I love an early morning walk with the sky just turning from black to blue. Makes for great photo opportunities and the air seems fresher too 🙂

It’s apparent that you larks vastly outnumber the night owls in my acquaintance!

I like waking up early, seeing the day begin, watching the light change from pale gray to pure gold. There are times I can sleep in with the best of them but it makes me happy to start a day with a witnessed sunrise. There’s a quality of stillness, of anticipation that permeates the air. Dawn and dusk – my two favorite times of day 🙂

Well done Judith on getting out so early! I love a decent sunrise, the peace, quiet, stillness and birdsong as much as anyone but it’s always so much better after a good night’s sleep but then, isn’t everything!

I know what you mean, Patti. BUT —
For the Hub and me (and a lot of oldies as well), we could respond to the poet’s question: What is so rare as a day in June?
with a resounding, A good night’s sleep!

Indeed, the sun does rise every morning; and I catch them all. 🙂 I’m a “middle to bed, early to rise” kind of gal; fortunately I only need 6 hours of sleep each night to feel refreshed.

So that’s the secret! I’ve wondered how you accomplish so much in the same 24 hours other people have. Pragmatically you get two more hours than the rest of us! And you can keep going like that, wow, I salute you, Stef, with much admiration!
